At The Beauté Collective, skincare is what we care most about in the world. Feeling good in yourself and your appearance is essential! Our therapists are trained in all things beauty and skin related, and the one our clients love at the moment is perfect for summer. So, let’s talk all things spray tan!
What is a spray tan, and what is it made of?
Spray tanning is a form of self-tanning where a mist of colour is sprayed on the skin. Spray tanning (or sunless tanning) has an ingredient called Dihydroxyacetone (DHA) that interacts with your skin to great a bronze colour on the skin.
How does a spray tan work?
When you arrive, you can often select the colour pigment you wish to be sprayed with. Some beauty salons in Perth have the mist applied through a spray tanning booth where several devices apply the tanning solution to the body. Other salons have airbrush operations where the solution is loaded into the gun and applied directly onto the skin with more precision. For an at-home spray tan, you can get the tanning solution in a bottle and DIY your bronze.
Is spray tanning permanent?
Spray tanning is not permanent. The effect is only temporary, and it usually lasts from 5 – 7 days, depending on the level of aftercare and activity one takes post-spray. The pigment will develop but will fade over time.
Will spray tanning cover scars and stretch marks?
Spray tans can help to reduce the appearance of stretch marks and scars by making the skin seem more even in tone. Remember that spray tans are not permanent, so this effect will wear off over time. Ask your therapist at our beauty salon in the Perth Hills their advice on covering scars and stretch marks.
How often should I spray tan?
This is an entirely personal preference. Many clients come every week or two for a new tan as they like to keep up their bronze appearance. Others prefer just to come in when they have an important event every so often. It is a choice you need to make as to how spray tanning will fit into your lifestyle.
How should I prepare for a spray tan?
Spray tanning preparation is crucial for a long-lasting, flawless result. Firstly you must shave or wax before you go to your beauty salon appointment. Doing it a day before is recommended so your pores have time to close so the pigment doesn’t get trapped. Exfoliating your skin will make the tan apply and look smoother as the tan loves to stick to dry, dead skin. Remove all moisturisers before the session as this can create a barrier between the skin and the tan. Remove all jewellery, and tie back hair, perfume and deodorant is a no – no! Putting moisturiser on very dry areas like knees, elbows and palms is okay though because the solution is more likely to stick to these areas. It’s best to leave this part to the professional right before application.
Is spray tan waterproof?
Showering after a spray tan is okay, the tan will start to fade naturally over time. Chlorinated water, however, is an exfoliant. Swimming in a chlorinated pool will make your tan lighter and potentially patchy, so be mindful of this.
Aftercare spray tanning tips
You can choose when you would like to shower after your spray tan application. The longer you wait, the more time the solution has to develop and darken. We recommend no longer than 8 hours as this is when the solution should get to its darkest. Ask your therapist for their recommendation for the pigment colour you want. Make sure to pat dry with a towel after showering because rubbing or wiping the skin can remove the tan. Moisturise gently every day twice a day to maintain the colour for as long as possible. Fake tan is not a sunscreen replacement, always protect your skin against UVA and UVB rays.
